Elsy Abi Assi

Elsy Abi Assi is a principal news presenter at Aljazeera Arabic. A seasoned journalist with a career spanning for almost two decades, she currently anchors the leading daily news shows al Hasad and Behind the News from the channel’s headquarters in Doha. These flagship shows are dedicated to expanding the audience’s understanding of top developments in the Middle East and the world through dialogue and interviews with leaders, news makers and experts. 

As a moderator, she has an in-depth understanding of the major developments shaping the world today, especially within the region. She brings an inquisitive and analytical mindset to the stage and the ability to expand the dialogue and foster a constructive conversation among panelists. 

Abi Assi is also currently the co-anchor of “Masar al Ahdath”, translating into Course of Events, a news show based on dissecting the aftermath of the war on Gaza and its repercussions in the whole region. She has previously covered top stories around the world as both a presenter and a correspondent. Her coverage included the last and previous US presidential elections and midterm elections from Washington. She has also reported on the crisis in Ukraine, covering the 2014 annexation of Crimea firsthand on the ground, and leading analysis on the 2022 full-scale conflict in her daily news shows. For the past two years her work was mainly focused on the war in Gaza and the events in the Middle East. 

She was previously based in Beirut as a correspondent during a time of transformative change in the Middle East. Migration, refugee crises and uprisings were central in her work from there. She is a trainer in journalism, TV presenting and TV interviews.
