Dr. Hemin Hawrami

Hemin Hawrami (born 23 March 1976 in Halabja, Kurdistan Region, Iraq) is a Kurdish politician, writer, and academic. A senior figure in the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), he has served as Deputy Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament since February 2019. He was elected as an MP in the 2018 parliamentary elections, where he led the KDP’s candidate list.

Hawrami has held several influential political roles. He headed the KDP’s Foreign Relations Office from 2011 to 2017 and subsequently served as Senior Adviser to President Masoud Barzani on political and international affairs (2017–2019). He was closely involved in planning and advocating for the 2017 Kurdistan independence referendum. Throughout his career, he has represented the Kurdistan Region internationally, speaking at major institutions such as the Middle East Institute, the Washington Institute, and the University of Oxford, and participating in events like the Munich Security Conference.

In his early years, Hawrami joined the KDP Students Union at age 13 and later worked as a journalist and translator for KDP-affiliated media. He became the youngest member elected to the KDP Leadership Council in 2010.

Hawrami holds a BA in English Literature, an MA in International Relations, and a PhD in International Relations focused on EU foreign policy in the Middle East. He has authored eight books on Kurdish politics.
