Dr. Gustavo de Carvalho

Senior Researcher, South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA)
Gustavo is a Senior Researcher on African Governance and Diplomacy at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and works as an international relations consultant. He has held roles at various think tanks, universities, and international organisations, including the Institute for Global African Affairs at the University of Johannesburg, the UN Peacebuilding Fund in Guinea-Bissau, and the Institute for Security Studies. He also regularly teaches at top Global South universities like the University of the Witwatersrand and the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, covering topics from transnational issues to international mediation. His work covers topics such as the influence of multilateral forums like BRICS and the UN Security Council, global economic architecture and the geopolitical dynamics that shape the global order. He follows closely the implementation of South African foreign policy, being regularly invited to share his views with both local and international media, including Al Jazeera, the South China Morning Post, the BBC, Newzroom Afrika and SABC. He holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the University of Brasília and a Master’s degree in African Studies from the University of Oxford. Gustavo is currently pursuing doctoral research in International Relations at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, exploring how Brazil and South Africa navigate the evolving global order.
